Green peas masala

Green peas masala is a very easily available dish in Kerala restaurants. One of my all time favourite combo is idiyappam served with green peas masala in Ceylon Bakers, Cochin. I have never ever found the same version and am always in search of it.

This green peas masala recipe here is a delicious side dish for chapathi or pulav. It really comes as a rescue dish when we cannot do our weekly grocery shopping. All it requires is onions , tomatoes and frozen green peas which are always stocked up.

Ingredients

Spice powders

Seasoning Ingredients

Garnishing Ingredients

Preparation

  1.  Heat 4 tsp oil. Add finely chopped onions and saute till it turns golden brown.
  2.  Add finely chopped ginger, garlic and green chillies. Saute till the raw smell of garlic goes away.
  3.  Add finely chopped tomatoes and saute till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  4.  Allow the mixture to cool and then grind it to a fine paste.

Method

  1.  Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Saute till the cumin splutters.
  2.  Add the ground paste and all the spice powders. Saute for 5 minutes. (Long cooking is not required since we cooked onion tomato mixute and then grinded)
  3.  Add the green peas and water. Cook for 10 minutes.
  4.  Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with hot phulkas.

Notes

  1.  If using fresh green peas, add 1 cup water and pressure cook for 2 whistles. I used frozen green peas in this recipe.
