Dinosaur Museum-Canberra

It’s still fresh in our minds, it was in 1993 when we saw the movie of our lifetime as kids “Jurassic Park”. The movie made dinosaurs our greatest obsession for next few years of childhood. Being Kids, you’re so small and only few feet tall, trying to visualize these gigantic creatures standing 30ft tall enthralled us all the time. Dinosaurs were just the most magnificent things we could ever imagine which once existed. Although, the obsession slowly faded by the time we reached adulthood, the facts about dinosaur still fascinate us every time we learn more about it.

Museum in Nicholls, Canberra

So, when my daughter insisted for a weekend visit to Dinosaur Museum in Canberra, which was also supposed to be on her birthday, we all four were very equally exhilarated and could not wait more to explore the place.

It is around 1.30 hrs. drive from Cooma to dinosaur museum, the tickets can be booked via online to skip queue ( https://nationaldinosaurmuseum.com.au/visit-us/ ) .The ticket price is reasonable and for a family of 4 (2 Adult + 2 Kids) it costs 50 $ AUD. One need to book in advance for timings of visit, we booked for the first batch at 10 o’ clock in the morning.

We arrived the premises at 9.45 grabbing a coffee from Maccas (Aussie way of addressing Mc Donald’s) and there was some decent crowd already waiting for opening of gates. We were impressed by many models of dinosaurs on the front side of museum; standing in different sizes, shapes, and colors. Felt like each life size models were eager to tell their story of glorious era that they lived in.

My daughter for a moment, believed that these dinosaurs may come to life anytime as shown in the movies 😉.

Once we enter the museum, we need to climb stairs to the first floor to watch the exhibits, the one thing that catches your attention is the picture hanging on the right side of the wall. The picture shows about the record of life, that is the timeline right from the formation of the earth to the dinosaur era and to the current day. It gives you goosebumps when you realize that the human and dinosaur eras are separated by at least 65 million years.

We started exploring different things in the museum, there was so much information on each of the exhibits, and there were many types of exhibits such as real dinosaur skeletons, dinosaur animatronics, fossils, different stages of evolution of these animals. Kids started loving every bit of this and we felt like living our childhood days again, the feeling was magical.

Australia has a fair share of dinosaur history, A plethora of information on different types of species that thrived in this part of the world is available. There are also several sites preserved where dinosaur footprints are still visible : Western Australia & Queensland have a lot of sites wherein you can still observe dinosaur trails till date.

After watching plenty of exhibits we moved down to the shops in ground floor which has sizeable collection of minerals, stones, fossils, and other collectables both for children and the adults.

Outside the museum there are lot of models and other interesting things to play for the children and photoshoot spots.

We suggest at least 90-120minutes of visit time to do justice for the work that has been put in to make this museum. There is a free parking space, toilets and parents’ room which helps you in a hazzle free museum experience. The place is also pram friendly for those who need it , only missing thing is the Café/restaurant near the premises.

With tons of information and mesmerizing pictures still in our eyes, we came out of the museum happy and satisfied.
