Chayote / Seeme badane kayi Chutney

Chutneys using vegetables are one of the easiest way to include any non favourite vegetables into diet. Chayote were usually used in making stir fry / palyas. But I needed to try something different and ended up in this delicious chutney.

Chayote chutney goes well with rice, idli , dosa and chappathi.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped chayote
  • 1 medium tomato finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp Toor dal
  • 1 tbsp channa dal
  • 4 dry red chilli
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1.  Heat oil. Add toor dal, channa dal and red chillies. Fry till it turns golden brown. Remove from the pan and keep it aside.
  2.  Heat oil. Add chayote , tomato and salt. Cook till chayote becomes soft.
  3.  Grind the dal with little water. Then add chayote-tomato mix and grind everything together into a coarse paste.
  4.  Serve it with hot rice, idli, dosa or chappathi.

Notes

  1.  Peel and chop chayote into small cubes so that it gets cooked easily.
  2.  Extra care should be taken while frying dal and red chilli. It should not be browned which may spoil the taste.
